If you are looking for cheap, easy appetizers, this recipe fulfills just that. The grilled bacon with pineapple is a cheap, easy appetizer that anyone can make, and even kids, under some supervision. Eat it at Hawaii-themed parties or have it as an appetizer in a dinner function.

What you will need for this delicious appetizer is really simple. All you will need is some back bacon and some pineapple cubes or rings. It is best if the pineapples were freshly cut, but if you do not have them, you can always get canned pineapples, where you can use the syrup for other purposes. Toothpicks or bamboo satay sticks are optional.

Basically, you will need to slice the bacon to the desired size. Cut them in strips which you will use to wrap around each cube of pineapple, or roll in the middle of the pineapple ring. If you are planning to wrap the cubes of pineapple up with the bacon, simply fold the four edges of the bacon in one direction, leaving extra so that you can keep it in hold. On the other hand, if you are planning to roll the bacon up in the middle of the ring, all you have to do is just that. Keep the roll in one and a half lap so the taste does not overwhelm the taste of the pineapple. You can poke bamboo satay sticks horizontally through the pineapple and bacon, and keep two of these per stick. Serve, and enjoy.

Honey was the primary sweetener, but was rather expensive. There was honey collected from the wild, and honey from domesticated bees kept in pottery hives. A cheaper alternative would have been dates or carob. There was even a hieroglyph (nedjem/bener) depicting a carob pod that bore the primary meaning of "sweet; pleasant." Oils would be made from lettuce or radish seed, safflower, ben, balanos and sesame. Animal fat was employed for cooking and jars used for storing it have been found in many settlements.
Meat came from domesticated animals, game and poultry. This possibly included partridge, quail, pigeon, ducks and geese. The chicken most likely arrived around the 5th to 4th century BC, though no chicken bones have actually been found dating from before the Greco-Roman period. The most important animals were cattle, sheep, goats and pigs (previously thought to have been taboo to eat). Beef was generally more expensive and would at most have been available once or twice a week, and then mostly for the royalty. However, excavations at the Giza worker's village have uncovered evidence of massive slaughter of beef, mutton and pork, such that researchers estimate that the workforce building the Great Pyramid was fed beef every day.  Mutton and pork were more common. Poultry, both wild and domestic and fish were available to all but the most destitute. The alternative protein sources would rather have been legumes, eggs, cheese and the amino acids available in the tandem staples of bread and beer. Mice and hedgehogs were also eaten and a common way to cook the latter was to encase a hedgehog in clay and bake it. When the clay was then cracked open and removed, it took the prickly spikes with it.

The Pineapple Express - Natural Phenomenon

People along the western coast of North America are subjected to a wide range of weather meteorological phenomenon ranging from sun, clouds, rain, hail and snow usually in predictable patterns through seasons. However, with global warming, new, more frightening weather events have started to make a presence around the world ranging from torrential rainfalls to drought to hurricanes and tornadoes.

The Pacific Coast of North America is famed for its mild weather, rain and mountainous locales - recently however it has become home to an unwelcome visitor, the Pineapple Express. Also known as the Pineapple Connection, the Express is a meteorological phenomenon with much atmospheric moisture leading to heavy rainfall which is brought northwards from the Hawaiian Islands. This occurs only on the Pacific Coast of North America and is named as such for the Island's bounty of pineapples grown throughout the year.

The Pineapple Express for many has been the source of inconvenience, wet weather over a span of a few days and danger. The sudden burst of heavy and continuous rain has burst dams, caused waterways to overflow and major floods such as the 1952 Central California Flooding, 1964 Pacific Northwest Flood and the 1996 Willamette Valley Flood which caused millions of dollars of damage and the loss of several lives. 2006 was an especially difficult year as areas ranging from Puget Sound along Washington and British Columbia, Canada to Alaska were hard hit with severe flooding and a record rainfall of over 350 millimeters.

The Pineapple Express is a strong southern branch of the Polar Jet stream with a frontal boundary moving at such a slow pace (or not even at all) with waves of low pressure emanating from it. These low pressure systems are the main culprits of heavy rainfall. Along the coastline there is large volumes of rainfall, however, in British Columbia, Canada, the higher elevations see high volumes of snowfall quickly followed by rapid melting at the warmer temperatures from the Hawaiian Islands are also brought with the Pineapple Express phenomenon.

Sometimes dropping a small volume of rainfall along the Pacific Coastline of North America, the Pineapple Express has also been known to double the average monthly rainfall of the area in a matter of days. The Healthiest Year of Your Life with Nomi Shannon, raw gourmet, author and raw food educator.

Nomi: People get really tired, really fast of salads. I do, but you can take the same things that you put into a salad and throw it in the blender and do it up, it's amazing what the addition of a tomato or slice of mango or something can do to a concoction like that and you can make yourself some really delicious things really fast.

Kevin: What kind of blender do you use?

Nomi: There are only two great blenders, in my humble opinion, Kevin. One is the K-tech which is the one I do recommend for several reasons. The other is the Vita-mix. They're both fabulous blenders. I prefer the K-tech. The main reason is it's a whole horsepower stronger but there's a few others.

The difference between one of these blenders and a Hamilton Beach or whatever is the difference between a Pinto and a Rolls Royce. They' re both cars but need I say more? In my book, for example, I assumed everybody would have a regular blender. They're not inexpensive. I would say to make this dish,grate the carrot, grate the parsnip, then put it in the blender. Well, one of these blenders, you throw the darn thing in whole. I throw two frozen, rock hard bananas, whole and 45 seconds later I'm eating whatever it is.

You can do with one of these blenders things you could never do any other way. I will take a couple of apples and cut them up and throw them in the blender with some cinnamon, I have to baby the blender a little because there's no liquid in there, and I can turn it into applesauce in a minute or two, because people think applesauce? Raw applesauce? No, it's completely easy and possible if you have the right equipment.

Kevin: It's great for kids, too. I think the price comparison, you can tell me if I'm wrong or not, is if you break two or three $100 blenders, you can eventually, you kind of go for the bigger one.

Nomi: Well, I personally have taken two, probably $30 to $50 blenders, smoking,outside to finish their smoking process in the air where I tried to make a pate or something in it. They couldn't handle it. I do understand Kevin that there are plenty of people interested in this kind of food that are never going to be able to spend $400 on a blender. I appreciate that and that's why in my DVDs I use a regular blender. One or two hints about that, if you have an old Oster blender or you can get your hands on one and that would be like at garage sales, 40 or 50 year old blenders grab it, because they have the most amazing motor. Now, they don't compare with the Vita-mix or the K-tech. But they're still nice and strong. My first few years I was raw I had an old Oster.

Kevin: I think that people sometimes just think that the only thing you can make in a blender is a frozen drink or a yoghurt smoothie and you mentioned applesauce and then you just talked about pates. How versatile is a blender for making things?

Nomi: There's a big crossover in equipment. When I make a pate I use a food processor because a blender needs a lot of liquid. The pate I like best, it's in my book, called the Sunflower Pate, and it's 3 cups of sprouted sunflower seeds and lemon juice, because that's a good preservative and some tahini and then some onion and scallion and different spices. I use it in the food processor. The secret to blending is it needs liquid. Food processing is for things that are drier. The food processor could never work with as much liquid as a blender would. It would leak all over the place.

Kevin: What about Salidako. Can you explain what that is, for people who don't know?

Nomi: It's an odd name, it's also called a spiral slicer and some people call it a spiralizer. Another name is garnishing machine. I finally just said, listen, I'm confusing everyone because every time the company changed the name, I changed the name. And it's called the Salidako. It's now made in China. It's just a simple plastic gizmo, but what it does is really amazing. Here's what is does that's wonderful. It will take a vegetable, and the most commonly used vegetable is a zucchini. You put a three-inch piece of zucchini in this little thing and you turn the handle and what you get is pasta-shaped zucchini. It has this fascinating way of shredding it and you get long, long strands. I've had three and four feet long strands, where I've had to cut them in the bowl, of angel hair sized pasta made out of zucchini or carrot or beet or sweet potato or parsnip. It won't work with anything soft. Just turn like a tomato to mush, most cucumbers to mush. It has to be a good firm vegetable and this has revolutionized sort of the palate of raw people. You just never have to eat a salad. You can sit your kids down and they can eat this spaghetti and it's tossed in a pesto sauce, which I'm sure as you know is garlic and olive oil and lots and lots of basil and pine nuts, just no cheese and it doesn't taste any different, and then top it off with a raw marinara and suddenly it smells like and it looks like and it tastes like Italian spaghetti. The only difference is, it's not hot. This has, literally this little gadget has revolutionized, because you've got to have ways of doing food fast that's tasty.

There's another one I've just learned about from Germany and it's called a Spiralo. If you do like a parsnip, beet, carrot, and turn it into this little skinny pasta -- I've done this at shows and little kids have walked by and I've got it on the table next to the machine to show what it does, and these little three year olds will grab it and eat it. The mother or the grandmother will go, "I can't believe it, he won't eat any vegetables!" Something about cutting that vegetable into facets, let's say, really brings out the sweetness like no grating or slicing ever could.

Kevin: Not only does it bring out the sweetness, I think, but it's just so much easier to eat. You look at a carrot and you're like, oh, a carrot. I got to chew this thing forever and when it's in that small kind of form, you can eat it and you just keep eating it and eating it and eating it.

Nomi: When I started with raw food, I actually had a Champion juicer at the time, but it was in storage. When I started with 100% actually all I had was an everyday blender, a good sharp knife and a grater and I didn't have any other equipment for at least for the first 6 months. So I do like to say to people when people say, "I don't have the money to go out and buy all that stuff." And you really don't have to, but on the other hand, I have to say, that having some of these gadgets, the Salidako I mean is $24.95, really the ability to change these foods, their shapes, their size, pureeing or taking and turning into this little strand what suddenly is delicate and tender instead of chomping down on some hard. I would never eat a parsnip the way you might take a carrot and chew on it the way you would a carrot. I just wouldn't, but it's so delicious when you turn it into the pasta. It's insane. It's like a whole other thing.

Kevin: You talked about some of the quick things you can do, like the applesauce. What are some other real quick ideas that someone can do to maybe make a meal like in 5 minutes and go?

Nomi: Let's not forget that almost any raw fresh raw fruit and vegetable can be eaten as it is. If you start out with a bowl on your counter filled with apples, oranges, bananas, whatever you can find seasonally, grapes papaya, mango whatever and then in your fridge you have different kinds of greens, like broccoli, cauliflower and all that there's nothing wrong with going and sitting down and eating three apples and two bananas and a mango. I mean literally. I very often eat a red pepper like you would an apple. I found some that are so delicious and I just literally just wash the thing off and bite it and even if I get some of the seeds they're not hot or anything like they can be. We're so removed from going into the back yard and plucking fruit from the tree or a walnut from the tree that we literally forget, especially the younger generation, that food doesn't really come in a box.

I've got a gadget called the Toss 'n Chop. It's such a clever gadget. You just throw everything that you want for your salad into the bowl and your dressing ingredients, everything, goes in a bowl but no cutting, no cutting board, no knife, no chopping, nothing. Then you just go at it with this thing, sort of a cross between a scissors and a tossing implement.

The other thing is, and I'm sure you already know this, is there's just a huge craze going on with something called green smoothies, which I actually did mention in my book, suggesting you could put your sprouts and things, sneak them in smoothies. Would you like my green smoothie recipe which is my current passion and crave?

Kevin: Sure.

Nomi: Okay. I put a cup of either orange of tangerine juice in the blender and that's taking about four tangerines at the moment. Personally I put about 8 cups of greens in, I wouldn't start with that many because it might taste bitter to you at first. So, if there are any supplements that I'm taking, and I'm usually taking some supplements, put that in. Then if I can get my hands on papaya and I put that in. Yesterday I put a little bit of mango in instead, or a handful of blueberries and then I top it off with two frozen bananas. I like it, because I like my smoothies to be thick and cold. It gives me about 24 oz of smoothie. It's fabulous. I have it at least once a day, every day. I vary out. You don't want to eat the same thing every day, no matter how good you think it is for you, because you need variety.

Again, plenty of pineapple juice, kiwis, and oranges. Stay away from limes and lemons.

How to Grow a Pineapple Stem?

Pineapples take time to grow. In fact, once you plant a pineapple stem in your garden, it can take about 2 years for the plant to reach a height of about 25 to 30 inches. At this stage, you can see the plant producing fruits.

Old-Fashioned Pineapple Pound Cake Dessert

If you enjoy old-fashioned pineapple pound cake, I think you will appreciate this recipe from my grandmother. This is a really delicious dessert cake that I like to make and serve during the summer months.

If desired, you can make the recipe using the topping listed below, or you can completely omit it and leave the cake plain.

Pine Apples

Ingredients:

1/2 cup vegetable shortening

1/2 lb. butter, softened

2 3/4 cups granulated sugar

6 large eggs

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 cup milk

3/4 cup canned un-drained crushed pineapples with juice

1/4 cup butter, softened

1 1/2 cup confectioner's sugar

1 cup crushed pineapples, drained

Tip: Do not substitute margarine for the butter.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the shortening, butter and granulated sugar. Slowly add in the eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour with the baking powder and then add it to the creamed mixture, 1 large spoonful at a time, alternately with the milk. Stir in the vanilla extract and crushed pineapples with the juice, blend all ingredients well.

Lightly spray a 10" round tube pan with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the pound cake batter into the prepared baking pan and place in a cold oven. Turn the heat on to 325 degrees and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the top springs back when lightly touched.

To make the pineapple topping: In a large bowl, combine the confectioner's sugar, 1/4 cup softened butter and the 1 cup of drained crushed pineapples. Pour this mixture over your hot cake and then let it cool.

Pineapple Banana Breakfast Muffins

This recipe is a Shakar Bakery original, and was inspired by a Hummingbird Cake recipe passed onto me by a friend! The hummingbird cake contains banana, pineapples, and pecans- a very delicious combination! I played around with the recipe until I came up with Pineapple Banana breakfast muffins!

Ingredients:

Pine Apples

-1 1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
-1/4 Cup Ground Flaxseed (Optional)
-1 tsp baking soda
-1 tsp baking powder
-1 cup Sugar in the Raw
-2 eggs
-2 tsp ground cinnamon
-2 tsp vanilla extract
-2 RIPE bananas- Mashed (almost black to add more sweetness!)
-8 oz crushed pineapples
-3/4 Cup Unsweetened Apple Sauce
-1 Cup Choice of nut- finely chopped (pecans,almonds and walnuts would work best)

Shakar Bakery Tip:

1. Use fresh pineapple instead buying the canned version. If you don't have the patience of doing it yourself, make sure that the can says "in its own juice!" instead of "in syrup."Remember that 8 oz is one cup!

2. If you can't consume wheat products, try finding a gluten free flour blend, or buy UNBLEACHED whole purpose flour.

Directions:

1. Pre-heat oven temperature to 350°F
2. In a large bowl mix dry ingredients- flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and cinnamon
3.In another large bowl mix wet ingredients- eggs, vanilla, banana, pineapple, apple sauce, and finely chopped nuts
4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix with an electric mixer until thoroughly mixed
5. Line up muffin pan with muffin paper
6. Fill your muffin cups accordingly with the mix (depending on the size of your tray, it could be 1/3 full or 1/2 full...be careful not to overfill so you don't have spillage!)
7. Bake in the oven about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when you insert it to the center of the muffin!
8. Remove from oven and allow to cool

I loved the taste, and the muffins are great for you! I warn you- if you like super sweet muffins, these won't be satisfying to you. I thought that the amount of sugar was perfect, but if you want something sweeter, then add maybe 1/2cup more of sugar to your blend.

Serving suggestion: Spread some low-fat cream cheese on top of the muffin.

I've reviewed so many cars over the past six months or so, that I may have been guilty of getting used to the thrills and spills of driving fast ones. If this is the case, my assignment this week brought me back down to earth - very slowly might I add - with a bump. The car in question is the Volkswagen Fox - the baby of the German manufacturer's fleet.

The car has a 0-60mph time of...wait...for...it...17.5 seconds. Top speed is 91mph and no, there isn't a turbo attached to the puny 1.2 liter engine. Yet to lambaste the Fox for being slow and unexciting is to completely miss the point of the car. The giveaway is in the model name of the car I tested - the Volkswagen Urban Fox. You see in this time of petrol prices soaring, roads becoming more congested and the car being the global warming villain, the Fox could well be where the smart money lies when it comes to getting around town.

I don't like to use the word 'cheap' but there's no other way to describe the Fox, with prices starting at £6,430 to be precise (in the UK I should add). To get four brand new wheels onto the road, with a Volkswagen badge adorning your car for this money is quite simply a remarkable feat. The cost saving doesn't end there either, with the Fox falling into insurance group one - the cheapest banding around. Fuel consumption almost looks made up with combined urban and extra urban figures of 46.3mpg.

Blimey this is starting to make a lot of sense. The Fox is quite tall too, so despite the diminutive length, the driving position is not too dissimilar to that of a larger 4x4 vehicle. The advantages of making the car tall, aren't limited to the driving position, as headroom and legroom are also boosted by the extra inches up top. There's plenty of glass around the car, making all round visibility excellent and parking a doddle.

Outside of its favored habitat things do go a bit awry with the Fox - particularly on the motorway. Now before you shout "the little thing's not meant for the big roads!" if we're being objective, there's going to be occasions when you're going to leave the big smoke and hit one of the multi-laned snakes cutting through the country. By-passing (no pun intended) the 0-60mph time, the Fox is - and I hate using this word as much as 'cheap' - slow. An overtaking maneuver requires the forward planning of a chess master and snooker champion all in one. Changing from fifth gear to fourth made little difference to my forward motion and worryingly, nor did a further shift down to third.

The tall sides also act as a pair of very large hands that grasp hold of every gust of wind or buffeting from a passing lorry, making the Fox a wee bit skittish in the outside lane. However, once off the motorway, the Fox feels far more assured navigating country twists and turns, thanks to a longer wheelbase than most in its class and wider track. In fact, rather than welding the accelerator pedal to the floor, a gradual motion combined with a neat gearbox brought great rewards in the great outdoors.

Parked up against it's rivals the Fox sits comfortably in the 'not ugly' bracket but struggles to make it into the 'pretty' range either. As with Volkswagen's other small hatchback the Polo, the Fox is subtly styled compared to its rivals, in this case the Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107. Yet there is something more grown up and civilized about the Fox when viewing it alongside the almost immature stylings of the other city cars.

An interesting fact for your next pub chatter - Volkswagen are committed to reducing the environmental impact of producing cars and are keen to promote recycling and greener vehicles. In the case of the Fox, it's built in Brazil where the Curana plant grows. Fibers of this plant from the pineapple family are mixed with a recyclable synthetic material which makes the material for the roof lining and rear parcel shelf. No the car isn't edible.

The Fox has been manufactured using the latest laser welding technology which means it's a very rigid car helping it garner 4 stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and features ABS as standard. Optional extras include alloy wheels, air conditioning and a CD player.

The Fox has a big fight on its hands, not necessarily from its competitors, but from the car it replaces - the much loved, and cute Lupo. Either way, the evidence is clear. Next time I get behind the wheel of a 2.0 liter turbo'd monster, I'll be wishing I was a far sensible human being and was driving a Volkswagen Fox.
