As kids are getting to the end of junior high, it's very common to take part in science fairs. Of course, for those that don't mind insects, they might consider testing out different repellents on cockroaches, such as DEET. For those that are interested in cooking you can test out whether or not Jello can be made with fresh pineapples, given that all recipes call for them to be canned. What seems like simple concepts can actually make very unique and creative 8th grade science projects. Along those lines, figuring out how the shape of an ice cube affects how quickly or slowly it will melt is usually something that students enjoy figuring out and understanding.
Upon hearing ideas like these, students usually start thinking of their own clever experiments. This opens up their minds to wonder about other things, and then they'll start to see how applicable science really is in their lives. In other words, 8th grade science projects aren't just about being fun and learning, they're about making everything relevant to the students, which ultimately is what they will take away from the class.
